Shaupeneak Ridge

Shaupeneak Ridge is a quieter, free alternative when the bigger preserves are packed. It offers easy to moderate trails, a peaceful pond, a small waterfall, and a lovely overlook of the Hudson River. On a busy fall weekend when Minnewaska fills up, this is the calm, uncrowded option that still delivers real scenery.

The trails string together nicely for a short outing, with no long climbs, so it suits most walkers. It is managed by Scenic Hudson, so there is no entry fee, just keep dogs leashed and check yourself for ticks afterward.

A few details worth knowing before you go: it is free with no reservation needed, open all day. Park at the upper lot for easier access or the lower lot for more of a climb. A good rainy-season or shoulder-season pick. Located on Poppletown Road, on the Hudson River side, roughly 20 to 25 minutes from most of our homes.
