Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Minnewaska is the crown jewel of the area and the closest of the big preserves to most of our homes, with the main entrance right on Route 44/55 in Kerhonkson, just minutes away. Perched high on the Shawangunk Ridge, it is a dramatic landscape of white cliffs, clear sky lakes, waterfalls, and cliff-edge trails, with the best fall foliage in the region.

There is something here for every level, from an easy loop around Lake Minnewaska to longer hikes out to Awosting Falls or the Gertrude's Nose cliffs. In summer you can swim in the lake at the designated beach areas, and the carriage roads are great for an easy walk or a bike ride. Arrive early, since the lots fill fast on nice weekends.

A few details worth knowing before you go: parking is $10 per vehicle. The park opens at 9am, with hours that shift seasonally. Swimming beaches run mid-June through Labor Day. Dogs are welcome on trails on a 6-foot leash, but not at the beaches. There are no trash cans, so carry out what you bring. Located at 5281 Route 44/55, Kerhonkson.
