Mohonk Preserve

Mohonk Preserve is the largest nature preserve in New York and a worthwhile short drive from our homes. It protects over 8,000 acres of the Shawangunk Ridge, with more than 70 miles of trails and carriage roads open sunrise to sunset every day. It is a favorite for hikers, cyclists, and climbers, and the views from spots like Bonticou Crag and the Trapps are some of the best around.

Note that Mohonk Preserve and the historic Mohonk Mountain House resort are two separate places with separate fees. The Preserve is the one you want for hiking and climbing at a reasonable day rate. Trailheads like West Trapps and Coxing are popular starting points, and the Testimonial Gateway is a gentler, family-friendly option.

A few details worth knowing before you go: the Preserve day pass is $15 for hikers on weekdays and $20 on Fridays, weekends, and holidays, with higher rates for bikers and climbers. Children 12 and under are free. Parking is first come, first served and lots fill early, so arrive in the morning on nice days. The Visitor Center is free to enter. Located off Route 44/55 near New Paltz, about 20 to 30 minutes from Kerhonkson.
